One Court, Four Locations

Boston, Chelsea, Dorchester, and West Roxbury Juvenile Courts are four sessions of one court, the Suffolk County Juvenile Court. Each session hears delinquency cases from its own area, but all Suffolk juvenile jury trials are held at the Boston session in the Edward W. Brooke Courthouse.

How Juvenile Court Is Different

Juvenile Court handles delinquency cases for children who were 12 to 17 years old at the time of the alleged offense. Most juvenile proceedings are closed to the public, and most juvenile records are not open for public inspection.

The main exception is a youthful offender case. For certain serious felonies charged against a child aged 14 to 17, the prosecutor can seek a grand jury indictment. Youthful offender cases are open to the public, and the judge can impose either a juvenile or an adult sentence.

Anyone 18 or older at the time of the alleged offense goes to adult court instead. See my East Boston Division (BMC) page.

What Happens in Chelsea Juvenile Court

Juvenile cases follow a different process from adult court. Typical stages include:

  • Delinquency complaint. The case starts with an application for a complaint. If your child was not arrested, a clerk-magistrate may first hold a hearing to decide whether a complaint should issue. More serious cases may be brought by youthful offender indictment.
  • Arraignment. Your child’s first appearance before a judge. The charges are read and release conditions are addressed.
  • Pretrial conference. The defense and the prosecutor exchange information and discuss diversion or other ways to resolve the case.
  • Motions. The defense may ask the court to dismiss a charge or keep out evidence.
  • Adjudication hearing. The juvenile version of a trial, before a judge or a jury.
  • Disposition. The juvenile version of sentencing, focused on rehabilitation and accountability.

Many juvenile cases end without a delinquency finding, through diversion, dismissal, or another agreement.

What You Should Do If Your Child Has a Case Here

  1. Tell your child not to discuss the facts of the case with anyone except the lawyer, including friends, school staff, and social media.
  2. Go to every scheduled court date with your child.
  3. Contact a juvenile defense lawyer as early as possible, ideally before the first court date.
  4. Bring any paperwork you have received (summons, complaint, police report, school notices).

Acting early can open up options such as diversion, dismissal, or a resolution that protects your child’s record. Every case is different, and no lawyer can promise a particular result.
